They either get involved. Or the friendship ends. There is no happy medium with most guys…

I really have some narrowing down to do. As for friendships, perhaps I should consider just sticking with the Scrunchies from here on out — if they can find it in their hearts to forgive me for ghosting them the last few days.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

BECKER

Butterflies have never been my thing. But with Lainie, it’s like I have an entire hive — swarm? — living inside me.

Her small hand is linked with mine, dangling between the console and gear shift, and I feel like my heart could explode. This morning might have been a freaking shit show, but now everything is looking pretty damn perfect; Lainie is looking pretty damn perfect. Even with a red and sweaty face.

I sneak a glance at her as we pull up to the mansion where she is staying. Which reminds me: “So, you never mentioned whose place this is.”

Desperately into this girl, I go to the extent of reaching over my body in order to move the gearshift into park, just so we can keep holding hands.

Lainie nibbles on her lip as she looks down at our clasped fingers. I angle toward her and give her hand a squeeze to let her know everything is cool, figuring the owner must be one of the guys Carrick mentioned she went on a date with.

Did it hurt that Lainie avoided me when she had issues with Carrick? Yep. Felt like standing on a highway and having a semi truck barreling toward me at eighty miles an hour. But did I understand? Yeah. She probably assumed I would side with him.

The thing with being best friends with Carrick, though, is that we call each other on our shit behavior. Which is why I never told him about my thing for Lainie to begin with.

“Um, well.” Her voice immediately zaps me out of my head and slams me back into the vehicle with her. “You know the guy Carrick works with?” she asks hesitantly, reaching up to run her fingers through her ponytail.

It takes me a moment but his name eventually registers. “Thayne?”

Lainie bobs her head and gestures in front of her. “Yeah. This is his place.”

Then I remember something else about Thayne, and my throat strangles around the words. “The double date guy?”

Her hand clenches hard around mine and her bottom lip disappears between her teeth.

My heart gives a painful squeeze, but I do my very best not to push her or make her feel caged in. Lainie is finally spreading her wings, and although watching her do that, and even being a part of it, is amazing, I know when she lands it might not be with me. Carrick tried to drag her back down, and he lost her. I refuse to make the same mistake. Best I can do is keep showing her how serious I am and hope she picks me.

Realizing it’s time to change the subject before the fluttering of her eyelashes turns into her crying again, I attempt lightening the mood a bit.
